inside] out - a program of Breaking the Silence / New Mexico
Our exhibitions showcase the talent and creativity of this community of artists, peers, and allies across New Mexico. Art can combat stigma surrounding mental illness and serve as a bridge to connect individuals.
Through courageously sharing their art, the artists create purpose, meaning, and community in the lives of many and overcome negative stereotypes.
inside] out Art Exhibition is part of inside] out Arts, a program of Breaking the Silence / New Mexico. The art classes culminate in an annual exhibition, which gives those who are living with mental illness a venue for sharing their art in a professional gallery.
inside] out is now in its 7th year and it has grown considerably in both scope and quality. The project originated in 2012 with the vision of Santa Fe artist Michele Relkin Altenberg, whose son struggled with addiction and mental illness. It has grown to include many professional artists and volunteers who offer mentoring and art classes at residential and drop-in centers in Santa Fe and Albuquerque.
New Mexicans from around the state create the artwork, with most living in the Santa Fe area. Inside] out engages with artists from Santa Fe Life Link Clubhouse; Casa Milagro, a residential community in Santa Fe; Albuquerque’s ArtStreet; and individual studio artists.
