Frequently Asked Questions

Is YAG supervised by adults?
Yes, at least one BTSNM staff member must be present at all YAG meetings and events. While youth are placed as primary decision-makers, adults still supervise and guide. All adults interacting with the YAG must pass a background check.

Is participation voluntary?
We prefer that youth fulfill a one-year term, but YAG participation remains completely voluntary. Members may choose to leave the group at any time, with or without cause.

Is there any cost?
As a nonprofit organization funded by grants and generous donors, BTSNM is able to offer this program free of charge.

How do I apply to be part of YAG?
1. Go to the YAG Application & Contact Info page.
2. In the “Application and Consent Forms” box, click on the “Application Form” link. Complete and submit the application form.
3. Complete the “Parent/Guardian Consent Form (minors)” if you are under 18 years old, or the “Consent Form (18+)” if you are 18 years old or older.
4. We will contact you with a decision shortly, via your preferred communication method (as asked in the application).

What if I miss the application deadline?
We’re sorry, but you’ve missed the opportunity to participate in YAG starting this fall. If you’ll still be in high school the year after that, click the “Application Form” link in the YAG Application & Contact Info page, and you will be shown a link for an “Interest Form” for the following year. We’ll contact you when applications for the next year resume.

Are there safeguards around mental health content?
All the content shown to youth is what is shown to schools across the state during BTSNM lessons. These lessons are clinician-reviewed and tailored to teens. We will encourage openness while maintaining a safe, confidential space, and provide resources as needed.
